GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — Crews continued to gain ground on the Slinkard Fire over the weekend, boosting containment to 60 percent on the 9,093-acre blaze near Topaz Lake.

A total personnel of 322 are patrolling the scene and fire activity has dwindled to minimal.

The latest heat wave will taper off over the coming week with a high of 94 expected today, dropping into the lows 80s through the end of the week and into the weekend.

The Minden-based Airbus Perlan Mission II glider broke a world altitude record over Argentina over the weekend. Read more on that here.

Toddler storytime for children 18 months to 3 years of age will be at the Douglas County Public Library this morning at 10:30 a.m. Children will participate in music and felt-board stories.  Preschool storytime for children ages 3 to 5 years will be on Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m.  Music and crafts will be included. The Minden Library is located at 1625 Library Lane.

The Gardnerville Town Board meets at 4:30 p.m. this evening at the Gardnerville Town Hall, 1407 Highway 395 in Gardnerville.

And the MindenFest farmers market on Esmeralda Avenue in Minden runs from 4 to 8 p.m. this evening.

As mentioned at the close of last week, I will be starting a full-time job as the marketing & communications coordinator for Carson Valley Medical Center this morning, meaning the Carson Valley Times as a whole will take on a very different shape moving forward.

The web site will remain online and I will continue to publish photo galleries and the occasional feature story. And the morning news roundups will continue through September.

The CVT will become more or less a hobby for me, and while there will still be plenty to see, it won’t have the regular updates or the up-to-the-minute feel it once did.

I’ve been humbled by the outpouring of support and well-wishes since the announcement and both I and my family thank you greatly for that.

That’s a full lid for this morning. Take care out there and have a great day.
