GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — Highway 395 remains closed this morning from the Holbrook Junction to Bridgeport due to the Slinkard Fire, which started in Slinkard Valley Tuesday afternoon from an apparent lightning strike.
The fire jumped Highway 89 Wednesday afternoon and moved east toward the town of Topaz, Calif. Crews are working to place a dozer line along the eastern edge of Topaz with numerous fire engines in place for structure protection.
As of this morning, the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators report the fire has burned 4,700 acres in cheat grass, sagebrush and pinyon/juniper with zero percent containment.
The town of Topaz has been evacuated north of Highway 89 to the Nevada state line. Highway 89 is also closed between Highway 395 and Highway 4.
There are five hand crews, numerous engines, three helicopters and support staff assigned to the fire. A Type 3 Incident Management Team is en route. A Type 1 Incident Management Team has ordered. We will be collecting updates on the fire at this link.
Light winds (around 5 mph) are expected this afternoon, along with sunny skies and a high of 92 degrees. Temperatures will reach up to 96 degrees Friday and hang around in the mid-90s through Labor Day weekend.
A READing Paws therapy dog will be available at the Minden Library between 3:30 and 5:30. Children of all ages and reading levels are invited to read with a registered therapy dog and the dog’s handler. Each child will spend 15 minutes with a dog. Time slots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Parental permission is required, and permission forms are available at the library.
Douglas tennis takes on Spanish Springs this afternoon with the boys team hosting at Lampe Park and the girls team making the trip to Spanish Springs. Douglas boys soccer is on the road at South Tahoe and Douglas freshman and JV football is at Reed.
