The Douglas High School girls tennis team fell in a heartbreaker against McQueen Thursday afternoon.

The teams battled to a 9-9 tie and then to a 3-3 score in the tiebreaker round. From there, McQueen was awarded the victory based on the advantage in tiebreaker points (34-32).

The final regulation match on the courts for the long evening involved a tenacious Nikki Alexander losing in a set tiebreaker 7-5 to send it into a match tiebreaker (all of the first round match-ups play one tiebreaker to settle it all).

Alexander was fighting an injury to end that final set, and was held out of her tiebreaker contest by coach Dan Hannah, which defaulted the point.

Each round ended in a 3-3 tie, with all players on the courts exhibiting first match jitters.

The senior-led doubles teams of Shelby Casaus – Natalie Alexander & Kelsey Carlson – Haley Doughty had stellar days, winning all of their sets and tiebreaker matches.

One team of note: Senior-led Lauren Wilsey – Amanda Shaffer went 0-3 in regulation, then turned it around, winning their match-up 7-4 to start the doubles sweep in the tiebreaker.

For drama, the last people on the court for the evening cannot be beat: Sophomore and newly-starting singles player Maureen Brennan battled through an 0-3 day before almost pulling off an upset in the tiebreaker round, ultimately losing 8-6 to end the contest.

“Overall a good learning experience for a young and inexperienced team,” Hannah said. “The future looks bright.”
