SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — A number of Carson Valley athletes and coaches helped the Tahoe Grizzlies youth ice hockey program to a pair of state titles over the weekend in San Jose, Calif.

The Grizzlies Peewee team (11-12-year-olds), which went 32-6-4 during the regular season, defeated the Ontario Eagles, Orange County Hockey Club and San Francisco Sabercats to make their way to the CAHA State Finals.

In the championship game, Orange County built a 2-1 lead that it held heading into the final stages of the game. Drew Gunderson scored off an assist from Jacob Pratt with 46 seconds left. Gunderson scored the game-winner 23 seconds later on an assist from Charlotte Sonntag.

The Grizzlies (13-14-year-olds) bantam squad went 28-8-6 during the regular season and claimed the NorCal championship last month. Valley residents Mason Croskery and Tyler Gunderson play for the bantams.

At the state tournament, the Grizzlies beat the Anaheim Jr. Ducks, the California Heat and the Stockton Colts to advance to the championship.

They defeated the California Heat 3-1 to claim the state title.

“Tyler is always our biggest warrior on the ice, assisting two of the three goals in the championship game,” said Bantam coach Ken Wood. “Mason served some time in the box, after letting the Heat know we mean business. We are here to win it all.”
