Carson Valley’s Signature Sandwich For 2016: ‘The Marchello’ From Abby Jo’s Cafe Girasole

In what shaped into one of our closest races since beginning the CVT Food Wars in 2014, Abby Jo’s Cafe Girasole narrowly retained its title for Carson Valley Signature Sandwich for the third consecutive year.

Holding off this year’s nomination round winner, the “Prime Dip” from David Walleys 1862, by a less than 1.5 percent of the total vote, “The Marchello” prevailed with 39.97 percent of this year’s vote.

We have created a virtual throwdown among Valley restaurants, seeking out the signature dishes Carson Valley has to offer. During the year, we cover burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, soups, steaks, salads, appetizers, breakfasts, pasta, dessert and fried foods (you can see the results here).

Cafe Girasole: “Marchello”

Full of provolone, turkey, carmelized onions, artichoke hearts, roasted tomatoes, garlic aioli and pesto, this panini served on sourdough is one of the Cafe’s most popular sellers. Comes with a side of house dressing and salad.

David Walleys 1862: “Prime Dip”

2001 Foothill Road, Genoa

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 5 to 9 p.m.

The signature dish of the 1862 saloon features eight-hour slow-roasted garlic and herb prime rib thinly sliced then topped with brown butter sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions. To top off the prime dip, it has melted gruyere and provolone. Served on a fresh-baked sourdough roll with a cup of rosemary au jus and seasoned shoestring French fries.

Hot, tender slices of Yukon Gold marinated tri-tip on a soft & grilled steak roll. Try it with the house barbecue sauce or bump it up to the deluxe with lettuce, tomato, onion and your choice of cheese. Throw in a side of beer-battered or sweet-potato fries to top it off.
