MINDEN, Nev. — Active Volunteers in Douglas honors David Thomas as the April Volunteer of the Month.
Mr. Thomas has lived in Gardnerville for 25 years since moving here from Visalia, California. He has a wife and a son and owned Carson Valley Garden and Ranch Center until selling it about eight years ago. He retired as a Risk Manager for the State of Nevada.
For eighteen years, David has volunteered for East Fork Fire Protection District as Fire Chief at Topaz Volunteer Fire Department and five years a member of the Douglas County Victim Impact Panel for the court system as a speaker on behalf of the County court system regarding DUI hearings.
He volunteers 40 to 50 hours a month. David became a volunteer with both organizations in order to be part of the solution and help others. He was approached by members of both organizations to participate. His favorite aspect of volunteering is helping others and knowing that his efforts are helping others.
He encourages others to volunteer saying that the satisfaction of volunteering without the expectation of compensation is tremendous. “It really makes you feel good about yourself … that you are making a real difference in someone else’s life.”
