Baseball: Douglas Goes 3-1 At Atwater Easter Classic
MINDEN, Nev. — The Douglas High School baseball team went 3-1 at the Atwater Easter Classic in California this week.
After falling 2-1 to St. Joseph in the tournament opener, Douglas defeated Redwood Christian (9-1), Jerry Manuel (9-8) and Atwater (3-1) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
Blake Murray threw six strong innings against St. Joseph, striking out five while allowing just one earned run before St. Joseph walked off the win with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Isaiah Schat drove in Douglas’ run in the loss with a double while Jayden Foster had the Tigers’ only other hit in the game.
The bats came alive against Redwood Christian on Tuesday though. Haydn Brown went 2-for-3 with a double and Haden Keller, Jayden Foster, Hunter Simpson, Kindel Isham and Justin Phillips each had a hit.
Schat, Foster and Simpson each drove in a pair of runs and Logan Fencl added an additional RBI.
Simpson struck out four and gave up one earned run in claiming the win.
Against Jerry Manuel, Douglas slugged out a 9-8 win. Tomas Leitenbauer drove in three runs, Schat had a pair of hits and an RBI, Keller doubled and Spencer Trivitt, Brown, Fencl, and Isham each drove in a run.
Tanner Valenzuela pitched 6.1 innings in relief to pick up the win, striking out six along the way.
Douglas got past tournament host Atwater, Calif. 3-1 on Thursday. Fencl and Leitenbauer each drove in runs and Keller picked up the win, throwing five innings and striking out three.
The Douglas junior varsity baseball team fell 5-1 to Fernley in the opener of the Bishop Manogue JV Baseball Tournament on Wednesday.
Ayden Murphy went 2-for-3 and drove in the Tigers’ lone run. he also pitched five innings while striking out three and giving up two earned runs.
On Thursday, Douglas fell to North Valleys 11-4. Eddie Cabrera went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. Elijah Hinojosa had an RBI double.
