Carson Valley’s Signature Burger For 2015: ‘The Danimal’ from The Grill Next Door

Posted By on October 19, 2015

Staff Reports

It came right down to the wire, with only six votes separating the top two finalists, but “The Danimal” from The Grill Next Door in the Gardnerville Ranchos won the title for Carson Valley’s Signature Burger for the second consecutive year.

Minden Meat & Deli’s “BBQ Guy” was runner-up for the second consecutive year as well.

We have created a virtual throwdown among Valley restaurants, seeking out the signature dishes Carson Valley has to offer. Through the first year, we covered burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, soups, steaks, salads, appetizers, breakfasts, pasta, dessert and fried foods (you can see the results here).

“The Volcano Burger,” from the new Jackpot Cafe at Sharkey’s Casino, advanced as the top qualifier from the nomination round and finished third in the final round while “The CV Steak Gourmet Burger” finished fourth.

Nominees had to come from locally unique restaurants. Nominees should be within the CVT coverage area (the Douglas-Carson line to the north, the foot of the Carson Range to the west, the Pine Nuts to the east and the state line to the south).

As always, we encourage you to get out and try all of the finalists. The point in all of this isn’t as much to find the absolute best as it is to highlight local eateries and their signature items.

Sharkey’s Jackpot Cafe

1440 US Highway 395, Gardnerville

Volcano1The Volcano starts with ground beef and ground chorizo combined together in a mixture percentage known only to Chef Bruce at Sharkey’s. A beginning amount of ghost pepper cheese (pretty darn hot stuff!) is folded into this meat mixture. The burger is then cooked and additional ghost pepper cheese is melted on top.  Some secret spicy sauce is added and a sprinkle of volcano dust, a seasoning blend of some pretty spicy peppers goes on top. Served with a stack of french fries or, for a small extra charge you can get sweet potato waffle fries which tend to ease the “heat” of the burger.
