Softball: Douglas Stays Alive On Day 1 Of Regional Tourney

RENO, Nev. — Three solo home runs felled the Douglas High softball team in the first round of the regional playoffs Thursday as the Lady Tigers lost 3-2 at Bishop Manogue High School.

Douglas fought its way back in the first game of the loser’s bracket, beating Damonte Ranch 12-2 to advance to the tournament’s second day.

Kali Sargent went 3-for-4 at the plate, hitting a double and a home run with four RBIs to lead the Tigers at the plate. She also struck out six, walked none and gave up just two hits in the win.

Allison Meyer doubled, tripled and drove in a run, Madison Parks went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Shaena Robinson and Nicole Dunn each collected multiple hits (With Robinson hitting a home run) and Layne Waggoner and Kylie Swan each broke through in the hit column. Swan and Robinson each drove in runs as well.

“In the second game, we came out swinging,” Douglas coach Rob Parks said. “We had multiple extra base hits.”

In the tournament opener, Sargent struck out 11 and walked one while scattering six hits in taking the loss.

Kylie Swan doubled and drove in both of the Tigers’ runs.

Douglas takes on the loser of today’s Reno-Reed matchup at 2:30 p.m. at Bishop Manogue High School. A win would put the Tigers into the 4:30 p.m. game for a spot in Saturday’s final round.
