RENO, Nev., March 5, 2015 — The Douglas High School softball team claimed its season-opener 8-6 over McQueen in eight innings in Northwest Reno Thursday afternoon.
Kali Sargent struck out six and scattered nine hits over eight innings to pick up the win for the Tigers.
With the score tied at five after seven innings, Douglas plated three runs in the eighth and then held on for the win.
Maddie Parks led the top of the eighth off with a walk and Mackenzie Brixey then singled Parks to second. A single from Allison Meyer brought two runs home and Corryne Diaz hit yet another single to score Meyer.
McQueen brought two runs across in the eighth but Sargent shut the door from there.
“Since our scrimmaged got canceled because of snow on Saturday, we weren’t sure what to expect going into the game,” Douglas coach Rob Parks said. “We knew Kali would pitch a solid game and we knew McQueen was going to be an improved team from last year.”
Sargent and Meyer combined for seven hits at the plate and Parks noted nearly the entire batting order hit safely, collecting 15 hits.
“We need to work harder on defense as we had five errors which led to many unearned runs for McQueen,” he said. “We will need to tighten this up, especially against the tougher teams we will be facing in our tournament coming up next week and then against Spanish Springs the following Thursday (Douglas’ home opener).
Meyer drove in three runs, Sargent went 4-for-4, Makayla Shaver and Diaz each had two hits and Brixey, Leonna Mortimer, Casey Peck and Parks each had singles in the win. Layne Waggoner scored a run for the Tigers.
Douglas’ junior varsity topped McQueen 10-7, getting a home run from Cloie Pratt.
