Today marks the opening of candidate filing for non-judicial offices in Nevada, signifying the official kickoff of the 2014 election season.

Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer Ted Thran says this day traditionally brings about 5 to 8 candidates lined up for the opening of business – then comes a steady stream through the end of the day. The filing period closes March 14.

Anyone interested in knowing more about how to file, the upcoming deadlines and key dates, the offices up for election or any other election tidbit can visit this handy Web site the Clerk-Treasurer’s office maintains: http://cltr.co.douglas.nv.us/elections/electioncenterhome.shtm

The Valley forecast this week is showing high temperatures ranging in the 60s for the duration of the week, with some form of a chance of precipitation running through Wednesday. Whatever rolls in is likely to be rain. But that’s also what they said before Friday morning’s snow storm.

The events calendar is fairly light today, though the Genoa Town Twirlers Square Dancers meet every Monday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Genoa Town Hall, Genoa. All ages from teens and up are welcome to a family friendly group of dancers. Refreshments are provided by club members. The cost is $6.00 per person for rent of the hall and the caller. Open enrollment will be conducted through March 10 for beginners with instruction from 6:30 to 7:45. Their caller, John Hal will be giving instruction.

This is the beginning of our ninth month in business. We continue to be humbled every day with the response the community has shown us. February marked our highest number of readers and page views per day – and would have been our best overall month if it had been a leap year.

We have a number of big plans and goals for the upcoming month, which we will keep you posted on as each item becomes ready. The final episode of The Season is this close to being ready to publish – expect that by the end of the day … for real this time. We have incoming stories about a big anniversary for the Kids Fishing Derby and about a former Douglas High standout attempting to continue their career at the next level.

The spring sports around the Valley are into their official practices now, with scrimmages upcoming this weekend and games and competitions starting the week after.

That’s a full lid for this morning. Take care out there and have a great day.
