The Douglas High School girls tennis team cruised at Bishop Manogue on Tuesday afternoon, beating the Miners 15-3.

The Lady Tigers made a tidy sweep of the doubles bracket as the teams of Kelly Sonneman & Katelin Teigen and Kellie Hergenrader & Tara Cottrill each went 3-0, Bryana McNamara and Ingrid Carlson went 2-0 and Jenna Hammond and Kayleigh Carlson teamed up to win the final match.

On the singles side, freshman Madelyn Landerfelt won her three set 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3 and Courtney McKimmey won three times as well.

The Tiger boys fell 17-1 against Manogue in Minden. Joey Swisher and Keaton Peters picked up Douglas’ only win of the day – a 6-4 decision in the first round, but coach Rod Smith said the final score wasn’t indicative of the overall effort.

“We played much better against Manogue than we did last week against Churchill County,” Smith said. “Although the score didn’t reflect our effort, I am proud of the boys for not giving up at any point during the match and for almost taking three sets in the third round.

“We’re making steady progress, but we still have a ways to go to become a good tennis team. Our younger players are learning the basics of tennis at an accelerated pace, but against good teams they are clearly underdogs. I do, however, expect our team to improve significantly in the next two weeks.
