ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – After a rough start on Sunday, the bareback and saddle bronc riders mustered a better showing at the second performance of the 65th annual National High School Finals Rodeo on Monday morning at the Sweetwater Events Complex.

Minden resident Wyatt Denny knows a thing or two about being successful at the National High School Finals Rodeo. On Monday morning, he put that knowledge to use en route to a 72-point ride and first place in the round in bareback riding. Technically, he needed two horses to get there, however, as his first horse had some problems in the chute and he was awarded a re-ride.

“You have to set your feet and get a strong mark-out because they’re definitely throwing those flags,” Wyatt said after watching a number of bucking horse riders take a no-score because they failed to comply with the mark-out rule. “After that, they’re looking for snappy feet. You just have to ride them jump for jump. I’ve been really excited to get on, not nervous, but excited about it.”

A senior this past year, the Minden, Nev., cowboy now holds a four-point lead in the first-round standings. Wyatt got off to a similar start in 2012, when he tied for second in the final bareback riding standings. Last year, he turned in a 75-point ride to take second in the first round. He also placed second in the short round on his way to splitting the reserve championship in bareback riding.

He competes in bareback again Friday evening. In the interim, he’ll compete in cutting Tuesday morning and Thursday evening and in steer wrestling Wednesday morning and Wednesday evening.
