Bison Fire balloons to 17,000 acres

Monday Afternoon update, from Dorothy Harvey, Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators

The Bison Fire increased dramatically Monday morning to 17,000 acres in size, according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch. Plumes of smoke are now rising from a very wide swath of the Pinenut Range in East Carson Valley. Sierra Front also posted increased road closures due to the fire. Here is the latest update:

Acreage increases on Bison Fire

 

Gardnerville, Nev. – Great Basin Management Type 2 Team, operating under Incident Commander Mike Whalen, reports fire fighters made progress overnight even though the fire remained active.  The fire has been downgraded to15-percent contained with the wind event that occurred yesterday afternoon.  The new estimated containment date is July 14.

Crews are gearing up for another wind event this afternoon and fire activity similar to yesterday.

The fire was extremely active on the northeast side yesterday afternoon and into the evening.  Contingency plans remain in place for positioning of both air and ground resources should the fire move further to the east.

No injuries have been reported, but the fire ran through the Slater Mine area destroying several old structures.  The number of structures destroyed is not known at this time.

The following road closures for non-residents are in place for:

·         Pine Nut Road at the intersection of Out-R-Way

·         East Valley at Grandview

·         Sunrise Pass at Coyote Rocks

·         Brunswick Canyon

·         Mexican Dam

·         Sunrise Pass at Artesia Road

Other voluntary evacuation notice remains in effect for about 20 structures in the area.
